  Complications

Although most people recover completely within one to two weeks, some may develop serious and sometimes life-threatening complications. Among them are pneumonia, hemorrhagic bronchitis, aggravation of asthma, secondary viral or bacterial infection of the bronchi and lungs (mainly due to pneumococci or staphylococci) resulting in recurrence of fever and cough, sinusitis, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscles) and encephalitis (inflammation of the tissue of the brain).

Symptoms of complications usually appear after one starts feeling better. Suddenly you may get high fever, shaking chills, chest pain with each breath and coughing that produces thick, yellow-greenish-colored mucus.
