TBE Meningococcal Disease Influenza Smallpox

  Clinical Symptoms & Signs

Following exposure and colonization, meningococci may pass through the lining of the nose or throat and into the bloodstream (meningococcemia). Once in the bloodstream, organisms may cause meningitis (inflammation of the meninges, the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord). Since acute meningococcal meningitis can be lethal in hours as a result of the entry of endotoxins (toxic substances originating from the bacteria) into the cerebral fluid or the bloodstream, accurate diagnosis and speedy treatment are essential to prevent neurological damage or death.
