TBE Meningococcal Disease Influenza Smallpox

  Differential Diagnosis

Early stages of bacterial meningitis are difficult to diagnose because they can be similar to those of a minor cold. Parents should carefully watch for signs of deterioration in the condition of their children and insist upon immediate medical help. The sentence "I think it might be meningitis" has saved many young lives.

The following conditions may exhibit similar symptoms as meningococcal meningitis:

  • Aseptic meningitis

  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever

  • Leptospirosis

  • Subacute bacterial endocarditis

  • Parameningeal infection / inflammation

  • Lead encephalopathy

  • Other bacterial strains such as

  • Streptococcus pneumonia

  • Mycobcterium tuberculosis

  • Escherichia coli

  • Hib
