Soon after giving birth, many new mothers start to think about how to get back to their pre-birth size. Most women gain an average of 20 to 25 during pregnancy, but it is important to shed this weight after birth to prevent becoming overweight or obese in the future. If you are a new mom eager to get back to your pre-birth size, follow these tips to lose the weight and keep it off.

Adopt a Lifestyle Change, Not a Diet

This may seem counterintuitive, but dieting can actually prevent you from losing weight post-pregnancy. Diets often deprive you of your favorite foods and are too strict to continue for the long term. If you want to lose weight, start focusing on making a true lifestyle change. Eat a well-balanced variety of foods that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy.

Eat Plenty of Super Foods

Include lots of “super foods” in your diet. These are foods that are light in fat and calories but heavy in nutrients, like salmon, yogurt, milk and high-fiber foods like fruits. Not only are these foods good for you, but they will also keep you feeling satiated longer than empty-calorie foods.

Stay Hydrated

Get Some Sleep

For new moms, getting a full eight hours of sleep sounds impossible, but not getting enough rest makes it more difficult to lose the baby weight. Your body releases stress hormones that can lead to weight gain when you are tired, so try to nap during the day when your baby is resting, or go to bed early until your bundle of joy starts sleeping through the night.
